Hunger Action Los Angeles (HALA) works to end food insecurities & promote healthy eating through advocacy, direct service, and organizing.

What is HALA?

HALA partners with 23+ L.A.-area farmers’ markets through the Market Match program, to make fresh fruits & vegetables affordable for our low-income community members.

HALA is involved all throughout Los Angeles county with projects to support advocacy, information sharing, & policy issues related to food access.

ANTI HUNGER EDUCATION AND ORGANIZING

HALA is working with low income people, nonprofit organizations and concerned residents to educate public officials about powerful anti-hunger legislation in conjunction with other groups statewide through the California Hunger Action Coalition (CHAC) Highlights include the annual Hunger Action Day in Sacramento. In 2016, HALA brought 52 low income and disabled residents to Sacramento to visit 40 legislators. They helped win the inclusion of more funding for Supplemental Security Income in the state budget.

CITY FOOD POLICY

HALA convenes members monthly to determine campaigns on fighting hunger locally. In 2009 Hunger Action LA members conceived a new city policy to donate surplus food from municipal entities.

MARKET MATCH BONUS PROGRAMS

HALA is working as part of the Roots of Change statewide collaborative to create bonus purchase programs at farmers’ markets for people who use SNAP benefits or who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Currently the program operates at 30 markets in Los Angeles.

CALFRESH OUTREACH

Hunger Action Los Angeles is collaborating with LA County Department of Public Social Services on increasing CalFresh (formerly food stamps) enrollment in Los Angeles County. HALA has conducted trainings for over 1,000 people and provided application assistance at trainings and via mail and phone. HALA is partnered with three low income housing developers to educate residents about benefits of CalFresh and assist them in applying for the Program.

POLICY TRAINING

Community education/issue awareness on anti-hunger policy topics including: How to Talk To Your Legislators and Hunger 101 (Please contact [email protected] if you would like to schedule a presentation for your group.)

HOLLYWOOD HEALTH PARTNERSHIP

HALA sponsors the Hollywood Community Action Network, a group of homeless and formerly homeless persons, in outreaching to the homeless community each Wednesday through the Hollywood Health Partnership at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood.

FOOD JUSTICE NEWS

HALA is informing the broader community on issues of hunger, food security, and the overall food system through weekly e-newsletter “To All Those Interested in Food and Justice” , as well as through Facebook and Twitter.

PEOPLES GUIDE TO WELFARE HEALTH AND OTHER SERVICES

Published since the late 1970s, the Peoples Guide has become the standard guidebook of public social services for people working in the field, people in need of help, and those just helping their neighbors.

Hunger and healthy eating are gigantic issues—one organization can’t resolve them! And various organizations working unaware of each other aren’t helpful. HALA collaborates with California Food Policy Advocates, Community Health Councils, Community Services Unlimited, LA Regional Food Bank, LA Community Action Network, Food Forward, Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles, the Healthy Grocery Store Alliance, the LA Food Policy Taskforce, SOVA Jewish Food Pantry, Project Chicken Soup, Healthy School Food Coalition, WORKS, and numerous other organizations, promoting and supporting each others’ work and issues.
