uptown whittier walk

Urban hike through Uptown Whittier

Let’s start off with – one of the co-founders of barrio.la is a Whittier resident, so any obvious enthusiasm or bias that you pick up on, is 100% related to us just digging this quiet community east of Downtown.

why we dig L.A.

Lots of spots in Whittier with DTLA views

Exploring Whittier, the first thing you notice is that it’s HUGE. In terms of land mass, it covers a lot of unique neighborhoods, & a big swath of land. So for today’s adventure, we kept mostly north of Whittier Boulevard, towards Uptown Whittier & Hellman Park – both of which cover the full north to south of the main drag – Greenleaf Avenue.

You can’t escape it, but Whittier is loaded with trees, & because it’s a bit older than most L.A. cities – the architecture is seriously Instagramable (sp?) whether through the commercial drag, or up a little through the Whittier Historic District where the houses cover decades of different architectural styles. With all the trees, you have a ton of shade – & you can grab anything from a boba to a michelada at the various independently-owned restaurants & shops on & around Greenleaf.

Take a look at the Whittier Uptown Association site for more details on the local businesses, & upcoming events.

Sitting at the foothills of Puente Hills, you’re close to a great trail-head a short walk up the hill from Uptown – where you can catch a ton of different trails with sweeping views of Southern California.

On this specific adventure we didn’t do the Whittier Greenway Trail, but it’s an awesome 4.5 mile bike & ped trail you can access from a ton of spots.

If you bring along the pup(s), the Whittier Dog Park is right off the trail on Philadelphia, you can’t miss it!

Los Angeles has so much going on & is alive with eclectic neighborhoods, places to see & things to do – so while we’re at it – we keep you in the know about cool things going on in your own ‘hood & the cool people making it all happen.

feel like wandering with us?
